M. Wall Offers Salt, Wood and Poetry

Hey Y’all!

We’ve got a really beautiful new creation in the shop!

Michael Wall is a local artist and an old friend to Young Blood. Michael works with Georgia Organics, a member supported, non-profit organization connecting organic food from Georgia farms to Georgia families.

He recently supplied us with a collection of his handcrafted wooden salt bowls. Each bowl has it’s own unique story, beginning with the wood’s discovery. All bowls are hand carved from found wood that Michael has discovered on one of his many hikes. Every salt bowl is hand-shaped, meticulously sanded, and then sealed with food-safe butcher’s block oil. This impressive artistry is topped off with a hand carved spoon for salt serving.  He also carves spoon and spatula utensil sets with a wood burned cardinal for a nice little design detail.

The woodwork is beautiful, no doubt, but Michael’s true passion resides in writing, particularly poetry. He has created a lovely book of his poems that for a limited time is included with each salt bowl purchase. The pair comes at an incredibly affordable price of $22.00, considering all of the love and hours that shaped these pieces.

Thanks for checking in!

-Carly

A poem from Michael’s book:

A fresh breath

Drawn at the death

Of a deep vicious, rotten

Winter.  And when we exhale,

We know that soon the jasmine

Will explode, the fiddleheads

Will rise up, and the

Feathers and buzzes will come back to this house.

In the stone corners of

Underwater homes, six-legged

Things will launch themselves toward food,

And the the sky

And then their mates

And then their deaths.

Canadian Artist: Jen Mann

Hey ya’ll!

I was just admiring one of my favorite artists and I just thought I would share with you all.

Jen Mann is a Canadian artist living just outside of Toronto. Since her graduation with a BFA in printmaking from OCADU,  she has since then focused on painting and developed a large body of work, which explores the subconscious, and focuses on ideas of freedom, perceived beauty, identity and home.

Rubyassata Handmade Leather Beauties!

Hey all!

Today I am featuring one of our newest designers: Rubyassata!

(Friends and leather magicians forever! Alisha and Courtney)

Rubyassata products are handmade and based out of Wilmington, North Carolina by Alisha Lee Payne and managed by Courtney James Bridgers. Alisha designs and sews and Courtney takes care of the business side of things, like a boss.

Every product  incorporates unique durable leathers with found vintage linings. Their company is inspired by their love for vintage and their resourceful attitude towards  misfit fashions that fall victim to being thrown out by their owners.
Devastatingly heartbreaking, we know.  But don’t fret! Dry those crocodile tears, because these girls find the misplaced fabrics and give them new purpose and a second chance at being chic!

All of the leathers are hand picked in North Carolina so that they never have two identical hides. All the hardware for the products are made in America! Alisha comes from a long line of seamstresses. She has been a collector of vintage remnants forever and finds her materials from a variety of different sources all over. Courtney and Alisha work out of a tiny studio space in the house that they live in together. These girls are busy, they also both work together for another one of our vendors in the shop, FreakerUSA!

Beautiful Decay

Hey all,

Good news-we finally got the newest Beautiful Decay book in store! I haven’t gotten a chance to look through it yet, but based on the website it looks like a good one!

One of the book’s chapter spreads (photo taken from the BD website).

An excerpt about BD’s 5th book:

“In Beautiful/Decay Book 5: Psychonauts we raise our anchor and set sail on an unknown voyage with seven featured artists whose work pushes the possibilities for consciousness within contemporary art. They each work in various mediums and conceptual frameworks but all share a common interest in the human condition. In addition to the features, we also invited 14 artists from around the world to create original work for our psychonaut project pages. The results are extremely unique and anything but predictable. Book 5 also includes a die-cut sticker created by artist, Gunsho.”

Also, in preparation for Daddys’ Day, come in and check out work by KES Carvings, one of our newest vendors! Mike, the craftsman behing KES, has sent us some gorgeous wood-turned pens, business card holders, pine and cedar coasters, and tea light holders! These wood-worked pieces would make great gifts for either an outdoorsy type or more of a suit-and-tie kind of guy.

Come check out the new goods, and maybe get a heads start on Father’s Day–or just treat yourself ;)

Stratosphere Shenanigans * New Items Rolling In

FIRST of all I have to share some video taken outside Stratosphere after the Little Five Points 10th Annual Halloween Parade.  Thank you to Thomas, Clarence and all the good folks who provided some of the best  impromptu dance mania I’ve seen in a looong time.

Click here for a lil taste.

Shop Matters…

The inventory table is starting to moan and groan as the goods roll in.  We still love ripping open the boxes of new designs to see what’s inside.

I’ll never get down with pushing Christmas on yas while it’s still hot out but I’ve learned we don’t wanna get caught with our Holiday pants down either. SO, we’ve been working on finding as many new artists as possible for the last couple months.  Here are a few new ones that have arrived just this week.

  • Paper Parasol -  Letterpress cards

  • Danger Press -  Atlanta cityscape print, (made up of  the letters ATL),  Atlanta cityscape hoodie, prints

  • Erica Weiner -  A few faves from her new line

Hasta next Wednesday!
