Highland Row : Shopper’s Delight

**Correction from last Saturday’s blog, “A Closer Look at the ‘Feather and Bone’ Artists”: Ed Trask is not and never has been a graffiti artist, he’s a painter and used to paint illegal murals on walls all over the world.  Apologies for my blunder.**

SHOPPER’S DELIGHT

We thought it would be nice to meet our neighbors on the row and do a little piece on the other bright businesses that call this sweet spot home.  Through our investigation tactics, i.e. interviews, we learned that most of the stores have been here for way longer than expected and are true Poncey-Highland institutions.

Our first stop was right next door at Atlanta Pro Bicycle.  We walked in on a Saturday afternoon and were greeted by Chris, the owner, and several of his bike buddies who were casually hanging out on what they called “no pressure Saturday”.  Chris, a cheerful, outgoing bike lover, told us that the shop has been in business for 17 long years, 14 at this location.  He spoke of the advantages of being on the row, with all the foot and car traffic along North Highland Ave. most hours of most days of the week.  Chris also remarked about the great camaraderie he and his neighboring shops share and how he loves working and riding in this bike-friendly community.  One of his favorite things about Atlanta: the Beltline.  He dreams of living right on the edge of the green path some day.

Our second stop on the tour: Gems of Africa, a 15 year Highland Row native.  Keith Washington owns and runs the store with his mother, Wallene, who was pleasantly helping a woman pick out a gold frame when we walked in.  This little shop is passionately devoted to displaying real African treasures, hand-picked by the mother-son duo from places like South Africa and Zimbabwe.  The store is covered with beautiful artwork, including carved serpentine sculptures (like the ones you can find between terminals at the airport), vibrant batiks depicting village scenes and wood carvings of wild animals you can only see on safaris.  This local spot links rural African artists with the Atlanta art scene and happens to be run by one truly lovely family.  Stop by and see Keith and Wallene, expose yourself to some culture and take home a little gem while you’re at it.

If you haven’t checked out Highland Row Antiques yet, don’t be fooled by the deceivingly small storefront.  As you walk past the register, you’ll come upon a set of stairs that lead down into a massive super-secret underground area fully stocked with eccentric clothing and furnishings that look like they could have come from the set of Buck Rogers.  This was Paty’s first time inside and she was instantly in awe over the interesting array of booths, each run by different local dealers.  It also helps that Bobby, the man working the register, is one quirky eccentric himself.  In between jokes, this self-proclaimed “antique fairy” told us about the strange, yet highly intelligent types of people who come to the store.  Bobby, himself, is a lover of old things and when we asked him why he thinks people are drawn to antiques, he gave a very insightful answer, as if he’s asked himself this very question.  He suggested that people are reminded of another, happier time in their lives when they see old things, things from their childhood, things that strike a nerve.  Bobby thinks that they find comfort in nostalgia and links to the past, or maybe antiquing is simply the trendy thing to do.  “It’s definitely an adventure watching people,” he said, before placing a pair of gaudy sunglasses on a wooden giraffe.

Our next stop was Ooh La La, a lively fashion boutique for people who are looking for something off the beaten runway.  You can find anything for any occasion here, at Ronni Mcbride’s foxy fashion haven.  Ronni’s been in business for nine years at this spot and sells clothing from both local and regional designers and also scouts out trade shows for original looks.  She loves this Atlanta community, where she both works and lives and appreciates her loyal customer base.  Ronni’s Spring fashion tip for all the ladies out there: don’t be afraid of color.  We think she’s quite the colorful character herself.

The end of the row came with a burst of enticing smells as we excitedly walked through the doors of the Atlanta Cupcake Factory.  Now, you may not be the hugest cupcake fan but these are undeniably delicious little edible works of art.  With interesting and unexpected varieties that change daily it’s impossible get bored, even with a store that revolves around this one specific genre of baked goods.  Get your socks knocked off by super inventive flavors like the best-selling sugar cookie salted caramel or apple cake filled with apple-raspberry fruit puree and topped with almond icing.  We know, you’re salivating right now.  We’re right there with ya.

So, what we’ve learned here is that the Highland Row is more than just a strip of stores.  Each shop is 100% local, 100% awesome and 100% Atlanta.  We’re a bit biased but we think Highland Row should be a stop on every tourist’s map.  And for all you non-tourists, next time you stop by Young Blood, you should definitely pay our neighbors a visit too.

Til next time,

Danielle and Paty

Bag Ladies and Woodsmen

Hey ladies and gents,

I’d like to introduce you to one of our lovely new vendors, and some beautiful new inventory from one of our friends whose work we’ve carried for a while.

Annilygreen is the love child of artisan Annie Green, whose leather bags and wallets have recently begun to grace our shelves with their leathery presence. Here are a few of Annie’s goods we’re currently carrying.

Cognac Leather Wallet

Gold Leather Wallet

Textured Charcoal Leather Tote Bag

I love the detail of the unique zipper colors on the wallets, and these bags are made of the softest leather.

Mike, the woodworker behind KES Carvings, has sent us a selection of hand-turned wooden bottle openers, wood slice tea light holders and pens…buthese pens aren’t just any pens, they are made using recycled .50 caliber bullet shells!

Each bottle opener we’re carrying is made from the wood of a different tree, including leopardwood, curly black ebony wood, and yellowheart.

Mike’s wooden tea light holders among Cassandra Smith‘s antlers and Ex Libris journals.

.50 cal bullet pens!

So yes, as always we have wonderful new things to look at (and buy!) in the shop. Stop by and say hello!

Gettin’ Hitched?

Hey guys!
Its Friday! Which is irrelevant for those of us who have to work weekends, but for those of you who don’t, congratulations!

After not being at work for a week I was super excited to see the new goodies all throughout the store!
I just got back from a wedding in Las Vegas at the Little White Chapel. Congrats to my friends Justin Brock and Kaley Baker! It was too much fun and I am still recooping from the lack of sleep, even though we got back last Sunday. Since I was a bridesmaid, there was a lot of prep for the wedding this month and it  got me to thinkin’… It’s not just the season for ghouties and ghoulies, it’s also wedding season! It’s prime time for wedding gifts. You should be the one to get something special for your blushing bride and groom, other than the 12-piece napkin holder set from Bed Bath and Beyond that 3 people have probably already bought for them.

We’ve got something that’s sure to tickle anyone’s fancy!

Something old: Instead of fine china, you should get one of these recycled plates made by Beat Up Creations. They are some of my favorite items in the store. :) She takes orphaned antique plates and gives them a modern re-glamed finish.

Something new: This is that new new ya’ll. We just started carrying this vendor called Peaceful Traveler this week. Something nice for the wall, and its poster size!

Something borrowed: Well you’re on your own here because we can really let you borrow anything.
Something blue is guaranteed because our gift wrapping paper is blue! What a deal!

Gentlemen!
It’s a no-brainer that if your woman ever gives you a love plant you DO NOT let it die because that is an immediate reflection on your human relationship. Right?? Here’s an alternative for a love fern.

These hypertufa plants are made by Southeast Succulents and are next to impossible to kill. If you can’t manage one of these, you must being trying to make a statement. Or maybe you’re just a major bone head.

That’s it! Everyone have a good weekend and bust out the scarves and flannels!
Oh, and in case you wondered whose hand writing this was, I’m the new gal.

We like pretty things..

Hey guys,

If you haven’t been in the shop in a minute we’ve gotten in some great new vendors’ work you should check out! Rebecca, our merchandising/visual display superwoman extraordinaire has the shop looking super fresh for y’all! The two vendors I’m featuring today, Cara Taylor Ceramics and Proteales Jewelry, are both talented ladies whose work I’m totally in love with.

Cara Taylor is from Northhampton, Massachusetts, and creates beautiful porcelain pendants and ceramics. We just got in some of her hanging planters, small vases and freestanding planters, any of which would make unique gifts (for yourself or someone you know…like me?).

hanging planter

slip cast vases, “seam series”

planters with drainage hole

Look at those perfect little scalloped grooves on the planters!

Samantha, creator of Proteales jewelry, hails from Hagerstrown, Maryland, and is a self proclaimed “twenty something jewelry-making addict”. Her pieces are simple and delicate, but still manage to be totally unique.

We only have a few of these rings. The blue is from a butterfly wing–the butterfly lived a long and happy life on a butterfly farm, and this was its gift to us after it passed.

Brass bow on sterling ring

“gunslinger” pin. This would make a great pin or tie tack!

Gee-tar pin!

Little bird studs

Little bee studs.

Hope you all enjoyed, come check out the rest of the goods!

Cheers guys, hump day’s over :)

Wedding Day Hooray!

Bonjour, Friday babies!

Given that I’m planing a wedding for January, I’ve been doing some serious research looking for talented crafters to add a touch of handmade love to my wedding day. With Indie Craft‘s “Wedding Day Hooray” show coming up on the 21st and 22nd of this month, I definitely plan to be there to at least grab a peek at some of the wedding-related goodies, and maybe gather some more inspiration for the big day. Despite my mother’s hesitation, the dress I’m eyeballing is also handmade, which is a huge plus in my book! Be sure to put this awesome event on your calendars, errbody!

You may not be planning a wedding this season, but it’s definitely that time of the year to be planning on attending one (or more it seems like). If you’re not digging the registry, the good stuff’s been bought, or you’re just feeling a little something more unique, definitely consider hitting us up for cool ceramics, art, or kitchenware for the newlyweds. Yes, we can bag it up nicely for you and find you an appropriate card as well!

Galaxy Tea Towel by Leah Duncan

“EAT” wooden letters by Slippin Southern (new vendor!)

Pugtastic portrait on antique plate by Beat Up Creations

Now go and love on somebody this weekend!

Steph

Start shopping, early birds!

Hey weekend babies,

Since I’ve been on an early Christmas-gift-buying spree, I thought I’d share some of my favorite gift ideas from Young Blood. Personally, this is the first year I’ve actually gotten a jumpstart on gift shopping, and I’m feeling less stressed just thinking about what I’ve knocked out thus far. Below are some of my favorite (and affordable!) gifts and designers.

Meg Leigh jewelry. It’s pretty, feminine, and her prices are fantastic.

Brass leaf earrings by Meg Leigh.

Sterling sparrow necklace, also by Meg Leigh.

A new vendor I’m really excited about, Patti Sandberg Ceramics! I ADORE everything we have of hers.  Patti hails from Portland, Maine, and it was all I could do not to buy everything we have of hers for my own kitchen.

Milton & Margie’s soy wax candles. Their scents are amazing, and their candles are all held in recycled containers like mason jars and little lanterns. We have fall-ey scents like “Pumpkin Pie”, “Pine”, and “Warm Apple Pie”, and classics like “Clean Laundry”, “Lavender” and “Mulberry”. psst! Milton and Margie are artist Jess’s  kitties, and the shop is their namesake. Love it.

And–be still my heart–prints by London illustrator, Julia Pott. To be honest, I don’t think anyone will be receiving one of these from me, unless it’s my man friend because I could still see it as his place, because I couldn’t bear to part with one.

I’m in love.

Now, as my mother would say, “go forth…” and have a great weekend!

Steph

I went to the Beehive Co-op’s new location this week and it was AWESOME! Beehive is the store in Atlanta that we have the most in common with (they sell all hand made items too, but theirs are all local or regional – here is their mission if you want to learn more. ) and it was so nice to see what they are up to! They moved to the Edgewood Shopping Center and the new space is beautiful and BIG with plenty of wiggle room for a relaxing yet stimulating shopping experience. I love seeing how other boutiques display their items and Beehive does a bang-up job. They have beautiful gift items such as hand made soaps, clothing, and gorgeous jewelry.

I got to meet two of the owners, Kanani Whack and Preeti Ayyangar, and they were really nice and helpful. It’s inspiring to see another business succeeding at a similar dream! Our very best wishes go to the ladies of Beehive; we wish you all the success in the world, all over the world!

Big love until next Wednesday,
Maggie
