Hello MAST!

Happy Friday!

The Mr. and I just returned from a whirlwind road trip around the Southwest! It was exciting not knowing where I’d be staying until minutes before arriving some days and rejuvenating to drive down open highway through deserted back roads surrounded by mesas and deserts (even if down one such lonely highway we forgot to bring water–oops!).

Sometime during the middle-ish of the trip we floated through Tucson and ran across a little reminder of home! In a cool warehouse district (think-Castleberry Hill in the middle of the desert)      I came across MAST.

Combining found vintage items and handmade jewelry, furniture, clothing, etc.  artist owners Sofie, Tasha, and Mellow have created a space that is eclectic yet cohesive, with a strong point of view. And what a lovely view it is! Check out some of my favorite things!

Love the burlap covered furniture and handmade light pendants!

I need this horse lamp in my life! And look at that mirror!!!

Mast is a must-visit if you find yourself in Tucson!

And definitely go with enough time to have brunch at Tooley’s Cafe next door!

The mexican wedding cookies are worth it on their own!

XO,

Rebecca

Lastly and lovingly, the inescapable “tablescapes” of Brooklyn Rehab. Alyssa Zygmunt, designer by day curiosity curator by night, takes our ideas of objects and “rehabilitates” them in a commercial and  whimsical way….tranforming our everyday concepts of a salt shaker, a coffee tin, or mug into interactive art.

Block Party

Katharine Watson’s beautiful block prints adorn more than one display at Young Blood. You can find her bold designs on greetings cards, cloth bound journals and zippered pouches too.

Each image is created by carving an original hand drawn design into linoleum with V and U shaped tools. Ink is then applied using a roller and the image is transferred after pressure is applied.

Block printing is one of the oldest techniques in textile designs, Katharine learned this craft by completing an apprenticeship at a printing factory in India. The nature of this printmaking means that no two prints are exactly the same.

If you can’t decide which of Katharine’s items to buy, may I suggest a notebook , so that when you decide you need more of her prints in your life you have a place to write your shopping list ;)

Be still my anatomical heart.

Lillian Crowe’s jewellery pieces are definite conversation starters; from shockingly accurate anatomical hearts to 3 pyramid long knuckle duster rings each piece is always at least half composed with recycled materials and 100% charm.

Drawing inspiration from museum relics and old trinket shops, Lillian has found an aesthetic that looks vintage, but is brand new.
Almost every one who works at Youngblood owns at least one piece from this collection of curiosities. I dare you to pick a favorite!

Panel discussion: “Why One-of-a-kind Matters” Vanessa Bertozzi, Faythe Levine, Heather Ross, Moderated by Amy Zurcher

Wednesday, May 5, 12:30 p.m.
SCAD, Welcome Center 1600 Peachtree St.

One of Etsy’s first employees, Vanessa Bertozzi is director of communications for Etsy.com, the Internet marketplace for all things crafty. There, she runs Etsy’s blog, Storque, developing content relating to the handmade lifestyle, and coordinates events that highlight the Etsy community of artisans.

Faythe Levine is a prominent figure in the DIY indie craft movement and an artist herself. Her work was featured on HGTV’s That’s Clever, and inspired her to open Paper Boat Boutique Gallery in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She is the founder of the popular Midwest craft fair, Art vs. Craft, and the director and producer of the documentary film Handmade Nation: The Rise of DIY Art, Craft and Design.

Illustrator and designer Heather Ross draws upon her own self-described “rural and unsupervised” childhood to create otherworldly designs and illustrations. Her whimsical drawings appear on everything from textiles and clothing to surfboards and stationery, and her book, Weekend Sewing, inspires do-it-yourself attitude with sentimental style. Ross also stays busy with her blog, “Weekend by Heather Ross.”

Moderator: Amy Zurcher has a keen eye for talent and a nuanced ability to help young artists market themselves. As the director of shopSCAD, with retail gallery boutiques in Savannah and Atlanta, Georgia, Lacoste, France, and online, she seeks the latest stars in SCAD’s artistic community for shopSCAD storefronts.

Happy Birthday week Julia!

Heeeeeere’s Maggie!

I’m as exciting as Jay Leno…right? Maybe not Johnny Carson but Leno?? OOH! For you Conan fans, he’s doing a tour to pay his employees who uprooted and moved before getting the shaft. I learned that at this month’s ladies supper club. :) (See Kelly’s post below. It was mmm mm good.)

I have modern sheds on the brain. Click here and maybe you’ll feel where I’m coming from. I bought a house this year and need a place to store my motorcycle and gardening stuff reeeal bad, especially now that Sprang is spranging. I’m going to ask my
contractor to build one that looks like this (left) instead of the one he sent me a picture of with the quote, which looks like this (below) for the same amount of money.

Wish me luck.

At home, I love modern design (straight lines, poppy colors, geometric shapes) mixed with old-timey design (country, pretty, feminine, floral). It’s a balance I aim to find and have a feeling it will take awhile to strike it. Fortunately, the journey is the most fun!

Young Blood Boutique is trying to find a balance too. It’s a fun challenge, trying to put ourselves in others’ shoes and what they like, not just what we like! There are a lot of influences out there: masculine, feminine, dark, light, heavy, contemporary, vintage, thoughtful, care-free, folky, punk rock, hip hop, adult, child-like…fortunately, I like them all!

When running a business they say it’s important to know your exact target market. I always say, “Our target market includes creative professionals, students, and artists/creatives in their 20′s through 40′s.” But really, I want to have something for everyone! I love it when Grandmas and Grandpas come in and appreciate an item if only because it’s hand made with care. And we want you to be able to come in and find a gift for Grandma and Grandpa too! Be patient with us as we continue working towards this balance. Working on consignment makes it more difficult since a lot of the artists and designers we approach don’t realize how awesome we are at book-keeping. :) (Props to Kelly and Jen for that!) Are there artists and designers you want to see in Young Blood? I want to know!
