Artlantis 2012!

Hello all!

Our friends at Beep Beep Gallery are hosting the 4th Annual Artlantis Festival June 2, 2012, 10am-7pm!
Don’t worry, if you want to participate there is still time to apply! But the deadline is fast approaching on May 18th so be hasty!

There will be live music, crafts, yummy food, and artwork of all sorts there!
They are still accepting submissions for this years event! Submissions are juried this year due to last years overwhelming number of applicants!

Artlantis is an all day summer festival that takes place on the lawn of Druid Hills Baptist Church. Unlike other Atlanta festivals, Artlantis is unique in that it exclusively showcases art and music from local talent. With ever-gaining momentum, Artlantis is well on it’s way to being a local tradition.

If you are interested in being a vendor you can find all the info you need to apply here.

Or if you just want to help out, Artlantis is also looking for volunteers for the day! You can get information about that here! There are different shifts you can work to help out with everything!

For any questions you have regarding being a vendor or a volunteer please email to artlantisfestival@gmail.com.

After you score some goods from Artlantis, have a bite at Cafe 640 and stick around for Ponce Crush that night!

I’ll have my own little booth set up with my room mate Bethany Putnam selling our vintage inspired flasks, Foxboxes! Be sure to ‘like’ us on facebook! All are one of a kind and made from old Life Magazines, atlas maps, and other old publications.

(p.s. also sold at Young Blood!)

Stop by and say hey!

Get out!

Hi all,

If any of you are looking for stuff to do in the coming weeks, you should check out some of Atlanta’s cultural eye-candy.

TONIGHT at Emily Amy Gallery in Castleberry Hill, Meta Gary’s “Animal Instinct” opens at 7p.m. Here’s a preview image :) I love the unpainted wood’s effect.

Next up is Ponce Crush on April 2nd, featuring three shows: at Beep Beep, “Smokescreen” features new work by Allen Taylor and Andrea Sanders, Yana Dimitrova’s “halfawake” opens at Kibbee, and at Young Blood “Medicina” features work by David Hale (Athens, GA) and Kris Anderson (Athens, ATL, GA) and a live show by Rahasya!

Finally, streetela’s hosting an exhibition and launch on April 9 (8p.m.-?) that will include an onsite store, live bands and djs all night and work by 15 awesome artists!

Hope you all brave our little heat wave and see some cool art in the community!

Steph

“I believe this show represents a strong mix of work that is moving, irreverent, edgy and traditional.  This variety will enhance the inherent connection between the work, allowing viewers to compare and contrast approaches,” says Jim O’Donnell, curator.

The show will display an array of artist approaches addressing the themes of spirituality, self-image, relationships, emotions, and modern life. An exciting blend of works ranging from large-scale drawings to mythological sculptures to surrealist-like compositions can all be found at the show.

Artists:

Karen Cleveland, Ben Goldman, Kelly O’Brien, Sam Parker, Chloe Alexander, Tamara Argo, Amelia Netto, Kurt Raschke, Katie Reising, Marcy Starz , Rachel Lambert, Melissa Bigler, James O’Donnell, Angela Topetzes, and Blaine Watson.

We are happy to announce the birth of our new gallery collective,

Ponce Crush!

Ponce Crush is Young Blood, Beep Beep and Kibbee Gallery (all centered around Ponce de Leon Ave) joining together to have all of their openings on the same night!
We hope to encourage show attendance and support of the arts in Atlanta,” says Ann-Marie Manker of Kibbee Gallery.

We will now host the opening receptions for our monthly art shows on the same night of the month, which usually falls on the first Saturday.

“There’s a great deal of mutual respect between the galleries, and with our spaces being so close, creating this kind of event felt like a natural progression,” says James McConnell of Beep Beep Gallery.

The collective will kick off their openings on Saturday, January 8th, 2011, with a collective animal theme.

Stay tuned for details about our annual clearance sale coming up in two weeks!

Weekend Time!

With no ado whatsoever,

I’m sure you all know about Sanithna Phansavanh‘s opening and Modern Skirts’ performance at YB tomorrow night, but here’s a little reminder. Also going on tomorrow night is Mike Germon and Truett Dietz‘s opening at Beep Beep gallery, which goes from 8-11p.m. Stop by and check it out as well (after visiting us, of course!). I haven’t gotten to see the show yet, and will be just as surprised as you all are when I come in tomorrow, but I’ve checkout Sanithna’s work online, and it’s freakin’ fantastic. Totally dig the superstition/mythology focus as it is, so I’m especially pumped for tomorrow night’s show.

1000 Cranes by Sanithna.

This be the flyer for Beep Beep’s opening.

What else is going on this weekend in the ATL? Ann-Marie Manker’s show, “Softcore War”, is opening at Whitespace TONIGHT at 7.

Hope you guys start off your weekend with some of the creativity and fun Atlanta’s art scene has to offer!

Red Alert Artist Call! Day of the Dead Show

It may be hot as doodoo but let’s not forgot our wailing and gnashing of teeth just a few short months ago as the bitter cold beat us down. Personally, I love summer so much that I will gladly take the heat. Just thinking about the coming Fall then Winter gives me a little shudder.

One event that I know will take the edge off falls right before the Winter madness and that is THE DAY OF THE DEAD SHOW!!!

For those of you who haven’t experienced the Mexican Day of the Dead tradition, it is basically a way to honor relatives who have died by devoting several days to their memory. The official holiday is November 2nd and leading up to that day, loved-ones build altars devoted to these relatives. They can be as simple as a photo with flowers or can stretch from floor to ceiling, loaded with all their favorite foods, huge bouquets, candles, and indulgences such as tobacco, chocolate and meth. (joke)

Please help us spread the word about Young Blood’s contribution to this beautiful tradition. Our two lovely friends, Shannon Mulkey and Tracy Wagner are helping us organize a group art show where Atlanta artists will have their way with miniature coffins along with a big ass throw-down where we’ll all drink, eat and dance our faces off while remembering days gone by with the departed souls in our lives. It’s a tradition I admire more than most and I would love to share it with all of you!

Love until death and beyond!

Maggie

Painting your City

Hey friends,

As a local and independent business, Young Blood is all about supporting the arts, and encouraging you to create some of your own. Check out this article from Purge ATL which covers our etsy craft party from June, and discusses a little of the indie craft movement that’s slowly but surely growing here in Atlanta and nationwide.

I totally grabbed this photo (from our etsy party) from Purge’s site. Hope they’re cool with that!

From purge again, here’s an awesome review of Steve Dixey‘s work and some of the thought process behind it. I first Saw Steve’s work at Beep Beep last year, and he had an awesome show here at Young Blood along with Ken TwoFour and Stevnik Mostrom a few months ago.

Finally, if you’re still procrastinating (ahem, researching) on the internet, read this fantastically well-written article by Cheree Franco about Atlanta’s upcoming Living Walls event August 13-15. It really got me excited!

Some work by Gaia, one of the artists who’ll be participating in Living Walls.

Hope that got some of your creative juices flowin’.
Later alligators!,

Steph
