To Do List this Weekend!

Stuff to do this weekend!

Little Red Riding Hood book release and signing Friday May 11th, 2012 -6p-9p

Anna Trodglen brings music and arts to Young Blood from 6-9pm as we celebrate her and her book release.

Most of you know Anna as a big part of the Atlanta music scene since the mid 1980′s as a singer/songwriter.. As an added bonus to the book debut Anna’s music collaboration with husband Dugan Trodglen and John Armstrong, aka DQE, will be preforming.  Anna is also known for her extreme talent and dedication to painting.
This is why the family at Young Blood proudly host the release of her new book, Little Red Riding Hood.
Little Red Riding Hood is collaboration between her and Anthony Owsley, whom did the lettering and the designing of the book. This dynamic duo came together to create a story book much different from today’s children’s books. They were going for a more traditional aesthetic inspired by the late 19th century/early 20th century story books. Little Red Riding Hood is a classic and they did a spectacular job at doing a modern day throw back for today’s children.

So, stop by parents and bring the kids with because this is a children friendly event!
Refreshments and snacks will be served too.

As the City Sleeps Friday May 11th,2012 -7p-11p
Mint will be hosting As The City Sleeps, a group show curated by Atlanta artists, Brandi Supra and Sean Fahie.

Here is a write up that Mint wrote about the show: “As The City Sleeps, is an exhibit concept developed over a year that will feature up and coming artists Emily Pidgeon, Estela Semeco, Jane Garver, Nikita Gale, and Will Mitchell. As The City Sleeps, is a group show hosted by MINT Gallery on Saturday, May 12th, 2012. Curated by Atlanta artists, Brandi Supra and Sean Fahie, As The City Sleeps, is an exhibit concept developed over a year that will feature up and coming artists Emily Pidgeon, Estela Semeco, Jane Garver, Nikita Gale, and Will Mitchell. “Night,” is defined as the time of darkness between one day and the next.  The time of day when no light from the sun can be seen.  Examples to describe “Night,” are, “It is not safe to go outside at nighttime,” or, “The animal hunts in the nighttime.”  This show will be a setting in which a conglomerate collection of human interactions at this said time of day are shown.  Completed in the artists’ own manifestations, they are interactions ranging from recreation, to things possibly of a sinister nature, to nothing occurring at all.  Inspired by the city of Atlanta itself, and the ever changing actions of it, ourselves, atmosphere, and those around us, the artists in “As the City Sleeps,” were told to visually express and interpret their thoughts on this very concept of night. “What are one’s expectations when going out?”  “What do people do?”  “Where do they do these things?”  Whether broad or specific, the goal was to incorporate a wide variety of artists who each specialize in a different medium and unique style.  All friends of the curators, each brought something different to the table. They took a simple concept and explored its complexity.  A natural event, something that happens in the same period of time each and every day explored through drawing, painting, and video. “- Mint Gallery

Check it out, there are going to be a lot of amazing artists showing that night.

The Atlanta Fringe Festival is this weekend! May 9th-13th!

The Atlanta Fringe has been a labor of love for a small group of enthusiastic arts and Atlanta lovers. Est summer of 2010, they’ve been envisioning, constructing, and selling the Fringe from the ground up, using very little monetary resources and Facebook to get the word out. This grassroots approach has lent the festival its own unique energy and it has taken on a life of its own in the year we’ve been building it. We hope for even more of that energy and growth in years to come!

Check here for more information and the schedule by venue or date!

Hope you all can pencil in one of these awesome events this weekend! I know I am!

Archive Gallery and Young Blood Present: Philadelphia Photography Exhibit, “Heaven Can’t Get Us”

Collaborations between Young Blood Gallery and Archive Gallery bring the Atlanta community live music and art in one night at the opening reception of “Heaven Can’t Get Us”.

Atlanta, March 23, 2012–Event Producer Melanie Wade will host the opening reception for the cultural documentation photographer, Matthew Gallagher, of Philadelphia on March 23 at Archive Gallery. Gallagher’s latest photography book, “Heaven Can’t Get Us,” is on display at The Philadelphia Museum of Art, and Young Blood will sell the book at the event and in the boutique.

Gallagher’s photography includes images that visually narrate the story of an alternative lifestyle by depicting what is unusual, unpleasant, imperfect and often subversive. Graffiti is a strong theme in Gallagher’s art as he photographs his best friends in the Philly graffiti crew “Dead End Kids” in the midst of creating their art.

Gallagher has been a contributing photographer to the Philly art community for over 10 years and is excited for his first Atlanta showcase. Gallagher said, “In my neighborhood I take pictures of graffiti, youth culture, and urban life, I feel like Atlanta resembles that culture and I want to share a piece of Philly with the Atlanta art community.”

The opening reception will start at 7 p.m. Local Atlanta bands Knaves Grave and Brother Hawk will perform on the stage at Archive Gallery.

Gallagher is traveling around the country showcasing his photography, and makes his first stop in Atlanta at the Archive Gallery. The event will embody live music, art, including a video component produced by Gallagher and most importantly, will provide the Atlanta art community a chance to peek into the life of inner city Philadelphia.

The event is free, all ages and located at The Archive Gallery 611 North Ave NW Atlanta, GA 30318.

YOUNG BLOOD GALLERY AND BOUTIQUE PRESENTS

“INTERBEAST”

March 5-27
Opening March 5th 7-10PM
Featuring:
Interbeast came about after Nick Kuszyk contacted us to let us know what he and his fellow artists and past collaborators Chip 7, Future Colors of America, El Kamino, and Parskid had been up to lately, and we are thrilled to bring you their work here at Young Blood.

Nick Kuszyk is a NYC artist known for his colorful and elaborate robot-themed works.  His style, while unmistakable, has drawn comparisons to Keith Haring and Bosch.  Kuszyk has made a substantial mark in the art world in recent years: as a Williamsburg street artist and painter,  the recipient of a fellowship from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, and as the author and illustrator of “R.Robot Saves Lunch”, a children’s book published by Penguin in 2009.

Note the figure in the bottom right corner- this piece is huge!

A view of a past installation by Kuszyk.
El Kamino, previously known as Elk, is a painter whose work is distinctively informed by the techniques he has honed throughout his years as a graffiti artist.  Or perhaps it is the other way around, and his rich, textural style accelerated his success in the realm of street art.  Fellow Richmond graffiti artist and founder of Born Ugly Magazine Michael Broth says of El Kamino, “…he’s the only person who I’ve ever seen use spray paint and paint like a painter does…lay down layers and build stuff up. An incredibly talented person in general.”  As of late, El Kamino has been exhibiting his paintings across the US in galleries such as Flatcolor in Seattle, Zakka in New York City, and Eye Level Art in Charleston. For more information, check out this video interview with El Kamino and RVA Magazine.

Parskid combines fantasy and street art to create his own world filled with vibrant colors and unusual creatures” (read more in this 2010 interview from Orange Alert). Parskid was born and raised in the Pacific Northwest where he drew inspiration from his childhood, the weather, nature, fantasy and folklore. He experiments with paint, plush and digital mediums. His work has been exhibited in many cities in the United States including Seattle, LA and NYC and abroad in Australia, Taiwan, Spain and the UK.

Future Colors of America are Albert Reyes, Matt Furie, and Aiyana Udesen, three California-based artists whose collaborative drawing and illustration work was recently described as having “a DIY sensibility, illustrative aesthetic, and fuck-all attitude who’s charmingly hilarious pop commentary is indicative of something we don’t feel comfortable defining… we for one hope that these truly are the future colors of America, at the very least we’ll settle for them being the future colors of the Bay Area” (Hi-Fructose Magazine, July 2010).  Reyes, Furie, and Udesen are all accomplished artists in their own right, and together they form a trifecta that has been the subject of national attention, gathering acclaim from the likes of Juxtapoz, Fecal Face, Format, and Hi-Fructose.  The Future Colors have had solo exhibitions in San Francisco at Giant Robot and Fecal Face Gallery.

Chip 7 is a rising star in the urban contemporary art scene, described by famed New York City artist ZEPHYR as “a visionary. He makes visionary art. What exactly that means to me is that he culls his ideas from the rawest place where the purest inspiration comes from; the internal core located at the center of us all.”  Chip refined his style as a graffiti artist and painter while assisting the renowned artist Dalek, and in recent years he has shifted his focus to developing his studio work, creating “brightly colored confessions of a clutter-brain through science fiction psychedelic fantasy” (Juxtapoz).

Be sure to join us for this particularly exceptional exhibit.
Let’s show these out-of-town artists some proper support!
