Artlantis 2012!

Hello all!

Our friends at Beep Beep Gallery are hosting the 4th Annual Artlantis Festival June 2, 2012, 10am-7pm!
Don’t worry, if you want to participate there is still time to apply! But the deadline is fast approaching on May 18th so be hasty!

There will be live music, crafts, yummy food, and artwork of all sorts there!
They are still accepting submissions for this years event! Submissions are juried this year due to last years overwhelming number of applicants!

Artlantis is an all day summer festival that takes place on the lawn of Druid Hills Baptist Church. Unlike other Atlanta festivals, Artlantis is unique in that it exclusively showcases art and music from local talent. With ever-gaining momentum, Artlantis is well on it’s way to being a local tradition.

If you are interested in being a vendor you can find all the info you need to apply here.

Or if you just want to help out, Artlantis is also looking for volunteers for the day! You can get information about that here! There are different shifts you can work to help out with everything!

After you score some goods from Artlantis, have a bite at Cafe 640 and stick around for Ponce Crush that night!

I’ll have my own little booth set up with my room mate Bethany Putnam selling our vintage inspired flasks, Foxboxes! Be sure to ‘like’ us on facebook! All are one of a kind and made from old Life Magazines, atlas maps, and other old publications.

Southern Images Opening

I’m sure a lot of you guys were out partying last saturday for Cinco De Mayo, but last saturday was also the opening day for R. Gregory Christie’s solo show: Southern Images. Thanks to everyone who came out for the event and for those that didn’t, the show will remain hanging till the end of the month so come check it out!

Greg is a children’s book illustrator based out of New Jersey who’s work takes influence from southern black history. When we talked he spoke of Bill Traylor’s life and art (currently displayed in the basement of the High) and how it inspired Greg to create pieces based off of Traylor’s story. Although Greg uses bright colors and joyful imagery there’s still a bit of struggle that comes through and pulls the viewer in and to me makes his pieces work as a narrative on their own without having to be in a children’s book.

Greg is a very well spoken guy and easy to talk to about his work. During the opening he was more than happy to talk to people as they came in, i even caught him coming in to the gallery yesterday to talk to people and share the message his work entails.

Atlanta Streets Alive

Young Blood Gallery is excited to announce that we will be a sponsor of Atlanta Streets Alive this year! Here are some details so you don’t miss out:

On Sunday, May 20th from 2-6pm, you can experience the joy of open streets along a two mile stretch of North Highland Avenue. This event transforms neighborhood streets into a coordinated cultural experience starring physical activity, the arts, and sustainable communities.

Amusing activities are planned all along the route including the Great Atlanta Bicycle Parade, a walking play produced by Wonderroot, StoryCorps, viaCycle bike check-outs, CNU Atlanta and Tactical Urbanism, laughter yoga, salsa, double dutch, boot camp, Soccer in the Streets, kung fu, tai chi, cornhole, a bicycle rodeo and so much more. Starting at Virginia Ave near Murphy’s restaurant, the route traverses five Atlanta neighborhoods: Virginia Highland, Atkins Park, Poncey-Highland, Inman Park, and the Old Fourth Ward, ending at the Highland Bakery. The route connects to the popular Freedom Park Trail and the Atlanta BeltLine project.

Young Blood is also excited to sponsor, along with the Georgia Conservancy, and a few representatives from the Congress for New Urbanism and American Society of Landscape Architects, an activity that creates temporary installations that show how North Highland Avenue can be more pedestrian and cyclist friendly – which includes temporarily pulling the retail stores and restaurants to the sidewalk and temporarily painting bicycle sharrows and crosswalks in the roadway.

For all of us who have no idea what a sharrow is, here ya go:

So, don’t forget and get excited! We will be set up outside with merchandise and our button making stamp!

Little Red Riding Hood book release and signing. Friday May 11th, 2012 -6p-9p

Anna Trodglen brings music and arts to Young Blood from 6-9pm as we celebrate her and her book release.

Most of you know Anna as a big part of the Atlanta music scene since the mid 1980′s as a singer/songwriter.. As an added bonus to the book debut Anna’s music collaboration with husband Dugan Trodglen and John Armstrong, aka DQE, will be preforming. Anna is also known for her extreme talent and dedication to painting.
This is why the family at Young Blood proudly host the release of her new book, Little Red Riding Hood.

Little Red Riding Hood is collaboration between her and Anthony Owsley, whom did the lettering and the designing of the book. This dynamic duo came together to create a story book much different from today’s children’s books. They were going for a more traditional aesthetic inspired by the late 19th century/early 20th century story books. Little Red Riding Hood is a classic and they did a spectacular job at doing a modern day throw back for today’s children.

So, stop by parents and bring the kids with because this is a children friendly event!
Refreshments and snacks will be served too.

Mint will be hosting As The City Sleeps, a group show curated by Atlanta artists, Brandi Supra and Sean Fahie.

Here is a write up that Mint wrote about the show: “As The City Sleeps, is an exhibit concept developed over a year that will feature up and coming artists Emily Pidgeon, Estela Semeco, Jane Garver, Nikita Gale, and Will Mitchell. As The City Sleeps, is a group show hosted by MINT Gallery on Saturday, May 12th, 2012. Curated by Atlanta artists, Brandi Supra and Sean Fahie, As The City Sleeps, is an exhibit concept developed over a year that will feature up and coming artists Emily Pidgeon, Estela Semeco, Jane Garver, Nikita Gale, and Will Mitchell. “Night,” is defined as the time of darkness between one day and the next. The time of day when no light from the sun can be seen. Examples to describe “Night,” are, “It is not safe to go outside at nighttime,” or, “The animal hunts in the nighttime.” This show will be a setting in which a conglomerate collection of human interactions at this said time of day are shown. Completed in the artists’ own manifestations, they are interactions ranging from recreation, to things possibly of a sinister nature, to nothing occurring at all. Inspired by the city of Atlanta itself, and the ever changing actions of it, ourselves, atmosphere, and those around us, the artists in “As the City Sleeps,” were told to visually express and interpret their thoughts on this very concept of night. “What are one’s expectations when going out?” “What do people do?” “Where do they do these things?” Whether broad or specific, the goal was to incorporate a wide variety of artists who each specialize in a different medium and unique style. All friends of the curators, each brought something different to the table. They took a simple concept and explored its complexity. The Atlanta Fringe Festival is this weekend! May 9th-13th!

The Atlanta Fringe has been a labor of love for a small group of enthusiastic arts and Atlanta lovers. Est summer of 2010, they’ve been envisioning, constructing, and selling the Fringe from the ground up, using very little monetary resources and Facebook to get the word out. This grassroots approach has lent the festival its own unique energy and it has taken on a life of its own in the year we’ve been building it. We hope for even more of that energy and growth in years to come!

Welcome our newest artist, Mab Graves!

According to Mab’s Bio,

She paints like a chimney

Drinks coffee like its illegal.

The name Mab? It’s not short for anything.

She is or has a cat.

They are sworn enemies.

Mab is a Pop Surrealist painter.

She says she is a Dreamchild Neverist.

I don’t know what that means,

Mab never went to Art School.

She is pretend artist.

The nicest thing a stranger ever said to her?
“Oh, I’m sorry. I thought maybe you were a child. Or a vampire.”

Hey guys!
Jolene wanted me to remnd you all that May is
nationwide adopt a black kitty or doggie month!
For some reason these guys get over looked at most shelters-

When we adopted Jolene from Fulton Co. Animal Services there were several black coated kitties that needed homes. So in case you are looking to adopt this month think about one of these beautiful coated furry friends.

Southern Images: a solo show by R. Gregory Christie

Gregory Christie was born on July 26, 1971 in Plainfield, New Jersey. Christie grew up in the community of Plainfield, New Jersey with his mother and father—who have both Creole and Jamaican roots. Having shown a gift for drawing and illustrating early on, Christie had his first published illustration in Star Ledger the summer of 1990. Christie graduated from SVA (School of Visual Arts, NY) with his B.F.A. degree in 1993.

Gregory recently finished a project for the NYC Transit Authority who asked him to create a piece for their Subway Soiree Series. If you’re in New York, look for Gregory’s work on subway trains all over the island of Manhattan, or you can purchase it here. Locally, you can see him at the High Museum this month on May 13 for a book signing and gallery talk.
He has also won an armload of accolades for his children’s book illustrations, including the Coretta Scott King award for Bad News for Outlaws: The Remarkable Life of Bass Reeves, and Deputy U.S. Marshal. Christie has illustrated the biographies of many other significant historical and cultural figures, including Richard Wright, Langston Hughes, and Sojourner Truth. Two of his books were on ‘The New York Times’ 10 Best Illustrated Children’s Books list: Only Passing Through and Stars in Darkness.

Gregory’s most recent undertaking is a real dream come true. After illustrating children’s books for over fifteen years, Gregory made the decision to redirect his passion for teaching history and culture through art to more of a community-based level. How did he make this transition? He recently acquired a nice space to operate a store in. Gas-Art Gifts is soon to open at the North Dekalb Mall in Decatur.
The bookstore/gift shop will feature Gregory’s children’s books, handmade products and the space will also serve as a live painting studio with weekend workshops covering everything from quilt making to dj-ing. Check out Gregory’s Kickstarter site to learn more. Take the time to watch the video to gain a real sense of Christie’s passion about bringing literacy and tangibility to art within the Atlanta community. Even though the opportunity to donate via kickstarter is closed at this time, it looks like it will be open to backers on the Kickstarter website any day now, so bookmark the site if you want Gas-Arts to be a staple in our community.
