While in the program residents will also receive promotional support, exhibition opportunities and professional development.

Rare prints by Tara McPherson have arrived!

Some of our latest eye catching prints in the store are by the talented Tara McPherson. Her prints have a very distinct style and portray unique characters involved in some sort of oddness. With her mostly working in paint as of recently these prints are becoming harder to come by, so come grab one while you can! The three prints we currently have are band related and each have a very different style.  The Stills poster has an air of simplicity and lightness where as our High on Fire poster has a raw edge to it. Tara used the silk screen process (with up to five colors) to create the prints we have in stock. Her work has been featured in some quite renown magazines such as Vanity Fair, Esquire, and Elle. I would highly recommend coming in and taking a peek at some of these funky and colorful prints, especially if you’re a fan of these musical artists! You can check out more of her work on her website.

Opening night of “Sea Change”

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QmFY3c6ciCo&feature=youtu.be

Saturday July 7th, 2012 Young Blood held their monthly opening for two artists, Sarah McCallum and Kent Knowles, for their show called, “Sea Change”.

Marcus Riggs is our Marketing/ Pubic Relations interns here at the gallery who produced video footage of this months opening exhibit.  He wanted the footage to have an ocean feel to reflect the theme of the show.

With the help of his friend and classmate of Georgia State University, Romaine Phillips, they were able to collaborate to put this project together and bring the opening show to you!

The Third in a Series: Interns

Meet our Interns: Megan Johnson and Marcus Riggs

Megan and Marcus are the PR interns for the summer. You can usually find them on the comfy red couch in the Gallery blogging away about the latest show or happenings here at Young Blood. Megan is from Gainesville, GA and attends the University of Georgia where she is studying Public Relations. Marcus is from LaGrange, Ga and attends Georgia State University where he is studying Marketing with a minor in Hospitality Administration. Marcus would like to work in the Marketing or PR department of The Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City, The High Museum of Art in Atlanta, or The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Megan would like to be a PR or Branding Manager for Anthropologie. They have both loved interning at Young Blood this summer. The opportunity to work with Atlanta artists has been a blast.

P.S. We totally planned the matching outfits.  jk =]

New Vendor: Olaria Studio!

I met Amy from Olaria Studios at the 2011 Indie Craft Experience, holiday edition,  (i’m pretty sure she doesn’t remember me chatting her up, soo many people!).  I instantly fell in love with the textures and patterns found on her pieces of jewelry. So when she contacted us about carrying her work, I was thrilled! Some intense negotiations followed and low and behold when I walked into the shop today, there was her work hanging on the display. My day was made.

Here’s some info I stole from Amy’s site:

Olaria Studio is the busy little design/clay studio and website run by Amy McClure. Currently based in Atlanta, GA, having been influenced by opportunities in Birmingham, AL as well Boston, MA. Olaria simply means pottery in Portuguese, which Amy kind of speaks after having spent some time in Brazil after college.

Amy’s Bio:
“I create all the pieces that you see on this site by hand. I learned this particular skill at the University of Montevallo and have since developed into more of a jewelry-maker of sorts, even though I enjoy a lot of mediums such as graphic design and printmaking…as well becoming a fan of letterpress & even more recently, a novice metalsmith. I use some printmaking & graphic design elements to give my work a playfulness as well, bringing a little bit of modernity to the traditional expectations of works in clay.”

Process:
“Currently, I like to incorporate the use of found objects to embellish the formal qualities of my work such as texture, color & design. Keeping an eye toward function & quality is also an important part of the creative process for me. I use mid to high-fire clay & glazes, which offer me a range of finishes & natural variations. I use an array of slips, stains, glazes, underglazes, & even a few overglazes to create my work.”

Inspiration:
“What inspires me is thinking about things being beautiful in their everyday place, like within the Art Nouveau and Arts and Crafts movement around the turn of the century. Things had functionality & encompassed a lot of different mediums. There was a touch of femininity & natural elements that were used in the most unexpected places. I hope it inspires you as well!”

We have many more pieces in stock, so come check them out and show your support for one of Atlanta’s own. We will also be hosting a trunk show or two from her, so stay tuned!

July Show-”Sea Change” paintings by Kent Knowles and Sarah McCallum

Young Blood Gallery Presents

“Sea Change”  paintings by Kent Knowles and Sarah McCallum

July 7-29

Opening Reception July 7th,  7-10 PM

Kent Knowles was born in Cheyenne, Wyoming, on March 5, 1975. The son of an Air Force Chaplain, he grew up traveling around the world, exhibiting an interest in art at an early age. While attending high school in Europe, Kent was introduced to the large-scale figurative paintings of the Old Masters. His current work reflects an interest in the technical aspects of traditional painting as well as the expressive qualities of figure, pattern and design in contemporary art. In addition to working as a visual artist, Kent is a screenwriter, filmmaker and author of the children’s book Lucius and the Storm (Red Cygnet Press, 2007).

Sarah McCallum studied studio art at the University of Georgia where she earned her BFA in painting in 2003. After completing her masters in art education, she taught elementary school art in Gwinnett County before following her dreams of becoming a full time studio artist. She lives and works in Athens, GA with her husband and son. Her large-scale paintings and smaller drawings often feature frenetic swarms of unusual sea creatures, anthropomorphic hairstyles, and fantastical flora and fauna. The horror vacui of these densely packed compositions contain a multitude of certain dynamics and interactions between a host of bizarre characters. Amidst the flotsam and jetsam of bright and sometimes garish colors, universal archetypes and symbols are revealed.
