Get To Know Your Interns!

Everyone Meet Amy:

Amy is a photgraphy major turned art history major at Kennesaw State University. Originally born in Chattanooga, TN she moved here at age 15 and says shes been loving every second of it. She’s been working at her dad’s business AmyCo.Relocation for the last 10 years (which is actually named after her, sweet right?) and says she likes the feeling of working at a small business and felt like that feeling translated well when she started interning. Her motives for the future are to work in a gallery setting and be surrounded by things creative like herself. So if you’re ever in the store on Saturday afternoons you’ll see her here working and smiling, so come on in!

The First in a Series: Interns

Here at Young Blood, we rely on our interns a great deal. Since they’re so important to us, we thought we’d start introducing them to you.

Meet Madison Folks, Clerk Intern:

Madison was born and raised in Midtown, Atlanta and has been a member of the Young Blood family since the she was 10. She frequented our old location at Grant Park with her mom growing up. She now attends Oberlin College and Conservancy in Oberlin, Ohio. She originally went in as a Pre-Med student. However, after taking Cell and Molecular Biology and Organic Chemistry simultaneously she realized she wasn’t satisfied without a little bit of art in her life. She is now majoring in Chemistry to fulfill her love of science partnered with Art History to quell her love of art. With these two majors, Madison plans on going into Art Conservation where she’ll have the best of both worlds!

Sea Change

We are very excited about our July show, “Sea Change”. The opening reception is July 7th,  7-10 PM! We hope to you see you there!

Here’s a little about the artists:

Kent Knowles was born in Cheyenne, Wyoming, on March 5, 1975. The son of an Air Force Chaplain, he grew up traveling around the world, exhibiting an interest in art at an early age. While attending high school in Europe, Kent was introduced to the large-scale figurative paintings of the Old Masters. His current work reflects an interest in the technical aspects of traditional painting as well as the expressive qualities of figure, pattern and design in contemporary art. In addition to working as a visual artist, Kent is a screenwriter, filmmaker and author of the children’s book Lucius and the Storm (Red Cygnet Press, 2007).

Sarah McCallum studied studio art at the University of Georgia where she earned her BFA in painting in 2003. After completing her masters in art education, she taught elementary school art in Gwinnett County before following her dreams of becoming a full time studio artist. She lives and works in Athens, GA with her husband and son. Her large-scale paintings and smaller drawings often feature frenetic swarms of unusual sea creatures, anthropomorphic hairstyles, and fantastical flora and fauna. The horror vacui of these densely packed compositions contain a multitude of certain dynamics and interactions between a host of bizarre characters. Amidst the flotsam and jetsam of bright and sometimes garish colors, universal archetypes and symbols are revealed.

Chad and Meghan Nelson are married ceramic artists who reside in Cullman, Alabama.  From their website, “We are two artists who just so happen to be married. After graduating college and giving the business world a try, we decided to quit our jobs and start an art studio. We teach classes, travel to art shows, and generally do what we can to make ends meet. Life is never boring around here!”

M. Wall Offers Salt, Wood and Poetry

Hey Y’all!

We’ve got a really beautiful new creation in the shop!

Michael Wall is a local artist and an old friend to Young Blood. Michael works with Georgia Organics, a member supported, non-profit organization connecting organic food from Georgia farms to Georgia families.

He recently supplied us with a collection of his handcrafted wooden salt bowls. Each bowl has it’s own unique story, beginning with the wood’s discovery. All bowls are hand carved from found wood that Michael has discovered on one of his many hikes. Every salt bowl is hand-shaped, meticulously sanded, and then sealed with food-safe butcher’s block oil. This impressive artistry is topped off with a hand carved spoon for salt serving.  He also carves spoon and spatula utensil sets with a wood burned cardinal for a nice little design detail.

The woodwork is beautiful, no doubt, but Michael’s true passion resides in writing, particularly poetry. He has created a lovely book of his poems that for a limited time is included with each salt bowl purchase. The pair comes at an incredibly affordable price of $22.00, considering all of the love and hours that shaped these pieces.

Thanks for checking in!

-Carly

A poem from Michael’s book:

A fresh breath

Drawn at the death

Of a deep vicious, rotten

Winter.  And when we exhale,

We know that soon the jasmine

Will explode, the fiddleheads

Will rise up, and the

Feathers and buzzes will come back to this house.

In the stone corners of

Underwater homes, six-legged

Things will launch themselves toward food,

And the the sky

And then their mates

And then their deaths.
