Postured Relationships

Young Blood Gallery Presents

“Postured Relationships”

June 2-30

Opening Reception June 2nd,  7-10 PM

Young Blood Gallery is proud to present “Postured Relationships”. Andrea Fremiotti’s black and white photography depicts people in everyday situations, but reduced to silhouettes so that they become anonymous design elements. Though he made his subjects colorless and “blank”, their postures and relationships to the others make them lively, relatable characters whose emotions and personalities refuse to be stomped out. The diversity of the locations and masking of ethnicities unifies the subjects and helps the viewers to see themselves in each scenario. The images spark reflection on our public actions that we think of as ephemeral. Could our own kiss on a park or fight on the beach have been captured and preserved by a lens?

Fremiotti is a commercial photographer and digital artist based in Atlanta.

He owns Burn Photo, a digital services shop in Brooklyn.

He snapped these images over a year between work days in Mexico, Italy, England, France, and Spain.

The manipulated silhouettes are a natural bridge between the technical and artisitc extremes of his profession.

New Ceramics By Erin Kay Spangler

Erin Kay Spangler is a local ceramicist based out of Fairmount, GA. She graduated from Kennesaw State University in 2011 with a BFA in photography and ceramics.

From Erin’s bio:

“Now days I can be found on my twenty five acre family farm in Fairmount Georgia where I draw inspiration from nature and my research of Native American culture/arts (as well as many other earth based cultures). Through the wonderful support of my husband and close family I am able to stay at the farm where I can be found most days in my studio with my young daughter covered in clay. ”

I know Erin personally and I admire her work ethic as well as her attention to the quality of her craftsmanship. All of her work is microwave and dishwasher safe! You can visit her website here. If you are a GA local you will be able to find her at many local festivals with her festival buddy, Denise Burke, where they partner up under the name “Mud Buds” (Mud Buds website here).

Come check out what we have to offer of hers in the shop!

Hello MAST!

Happy Friday!

The Mr. and I just returned from a whirlwind road trip around the Southwest! It was exciting not knowing where I’d be staying until minutes before arriving some days and rejuvenating to drive down open highway through deserted back roads surrounded by mesas and deserts (even if down one such lonely highway we forgot to bring water–oops!).

Sometime during the middle-ish of the trip we floated through Tucson and ran across a little reminder of home! In a cool warehouse district (think-Castleberry Hill in the middle of the desert)      I came across MAST.

Combining found vintage items and handmade jewelry, furniture, clothing, etc.  artist owners Sofie, Tasha, and Mellow have created a space that is eclectic yet cohesive, with a strong point of view. And what a lovely view it is! Check out some of my favorite things!

Love the burlap covered furniture and handmade light pendants!

I need this horse lamp in my life! And look at that mirror!!!

Mast is a must-visit if you find yourself in Tucson!

And definitely go with enough time to have brunch at Tooley’s Cafe next door!

The mexican wedding cookies are worth it on their own!

XO,

Rebecca

Behind The Scenes: Man vs Ink

I’m sure you have all seen the beautiful and witty prints around our shop from Man vs Ink.

We thought we would take a moment to honor the man behind the prints.

Man vs Ink is a full service one man print and design shop based in Portland, Oregon. Fred DiMeglio is the Man behind the name and believes man and ink can get along after all!

The work and dedication that goes into creating and editioning  prints is quite tedious. Preserving the ‘process’ of printmaking is something that Young Blood holds dear to our hearts, and is the driving force in our continual support of artists like Fred Dimeglio.

Oh hello Fred!

Beer - Four color silk screen print
Big Rig - Glow in the Dark Screenprint
Today we Ride - Two Color Silk Screen Print
America - Two Color Silk Screen Avocado/Forest
Young Blood proudly carries all of the prints above and well as others.
Thanks to Fred, and all the artists the make up our family!
Till next time

WonderRoot

Continuing its commitment to artist development, WonderRoot is proud to announce The Walthall Artist Fellowship, a one-year professional development program for 12 Atlanta-area artists in an effort to forever impact artists’ careers by providing them vital resources and support to significantly advance and strengthen their professional and creative practices.

Building on a model of learning and exchange which connects artists to mentors, peer artists, and leaders in the field, The Walthall Artist Fellowship is comprised of five components: a monthly symposium, peer learning and roundtable discussions, one-t0-one artist mentorship, a five-day residency at Ossabaw Island and a group exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia.

Maggie Ginestra, WonderRoot’s new Creative Director says “Walthall will seek to strike a balance between professional and creative development while highlighting the interactivity of the two. The monthly symposia with arts leaders regarding issues from grant writing to community engagement will consider impact upon the artists’ practices toward an integrated advancement, professionally and artistically.  And the time the 12 Fellows spend together gaining tools and resources to advance professionally will inevitably inform the collaborative strands of their culminating group exhibition.”

WonderRoot celebrates time away from artists’ usual environment and practice, and in order to create a space for both reflection and creativity, Fellows will take part in a group residency on Ossabaw Island following the eight months of symposia.  This residency will be fully funded by WonderRoot, and artists will spend five days and nights together on this barrier island.  A special thanks by the Ossabaw Island Foundation for making this possible.

The program will culminate in a group exhibition in summer 2013 at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia featuring new work of all twelve Fellows.  The show will be curated by Maggie Ginestra and will feature visual and performance work as the Fellowship will include artists ofvarious disciplines.

The application period is now open!

In order to apply, artists should visit: www.wonderroot.org/professionaldevelopment/walthallartistfellowship. The application deadline is June 5, 2012 at 11:59pm . The application is open to the public and free! Applicants will be required to submit a short bio, samples of their work, and answer questions about their practice and professional careers.
