SCAD professor speaking on photographer Diane Arbus

Photography buffs & Art historians mark your calendar for Friday May 4, 6pm at Jennifer Schwartz Gallery. Fredrick Gross will be signing his newest book about influential photographer Diane Arbus.

“Frederick Gross, an art history professor at SCAD-Savannah, will discuss his research on Diane Arbus’s work focusing on the moment in which it was produced and first viewed to reveal its broader significance for analyzing and mapping the culture of the 1960s. ”

Arbus was a New York photographer for Esquire, Vogue, The Sunday Times Magazine. Her work has been exhibited worldwide & won the Guggenheim in 1963 & 1966.  Working in Black & White square format Arbus created beautifully haunting images of circus performers, nudists, transgendered & the “freaks” of our 1960s American landscape.

Rubyassata Handmade Leather Beauties!

Hey all!

Today I am featuring one of our newest designers: Rubyassata!

(Friends and leather magicians forever! Alisha and Courtney)

Rubyassata products are handmade and based out of Wilmington, North Carolina by Alisha Lee Payne and managed by Courtney James Bridgers. Alisha designs and sews and Courtney takes care of the business side of things, like a boss.

Every product  incorporates unique durable leathers with found vintage linings. Their company is inspired by their love for vintage and their resourceful attitude towards  misfit fashions that fall victim to being thrown out by their owners.
Devastatingly heartbreaking, we know.  But don’t fret! Dry those crocodile tears, because these girls find the misplaced fabrics and give them new purpose and a second chance at being chic!

All of the leathers are hand picked in North Carolina so that they never have two identical hides. All the hardware for the products are made in America! Alisha comes from a long line of seamstresses. She has been a collector of vintage remnants forever and finds her materials from a variety of different sources all over. Courtney and Alisha work out of a tiny studio space in the house that they live in together. These girls are busy, they also both work together for another one of our vendors in the shop, FreakerUSA!

MAY FEATURED ARTIST: GREGORY CHRISTIE

In anticipation of our May Opening, take a moment to learn about Artist and Atlanta Community Activist, Gregory Christie.

Gregory Christie was born on July 26, 1971 in Plainfield, New Jersey. Christie grew up in the community of Plainfield, New Jersey with his mother and father—who have both Creole and Jamaican roots. Having shown a gift for drawing and illustrating early on, Christie had his first published illustration in Star Ledger the summer of 1990. Christie graduated from SVA (School of Visual Arts, NY) with his B.F.A. degree in 1993.

Gregory recently finished a project for the NYC Transit Authority who asked him to create a piece for their Subway Soiree Series. If you’re in New York, look for Gregory’s work on subway trains all over the island of Manhattan, or you can purchase it here. Locally, you can see him at the High Museum this month on May 13 for a book signing and gallery talk.
He has also won an armload of accolades for his children’s book illustrations, including the Coretta Scott King award for Bad News for Outlaws: The Remarkable Life of Bass Reeves, and Deputy U.S. Marshal. Christie has illustrated the biographies of many other significant historical and cultural figures, including Richard Wright, Langston Hughes, and Sojourner Truth. Two of his books were on ‘The New York Times’ 10 Best Illustrated Children’s Books list: Only Passing Through and Stars in Darkness.

Gregory’s most recent undertaking is a real dream come true. After illustrating children’s books for over fifteen years, Gregory made the decision to redirect his passion for teaching history and culture through art to more of a community-based level. How did he make this transition? He recently acquired a nice space to operate a store in. Gas-Art Gifts is soon to open at the North Dekalb Mall in Decatur.
The bookstore/gift shop will feature Gregory’s children’s books, handmade products and the space will also serve as a live painting studio with weekend workshops covering everything from quilt making to dj-ing. Check out Gregory’s Kickstarter site to learn more. Take the time to watch the video to gain a real sense of Christie’s passion about bringing literacy and tangibility to art within the Atlanta community. Even though the opportunity to donate via kickstart is closed at this time, it looks like it will be open to backers on the Kickstarter website any day now, so bookmark the site if you want Gas-Arts to be a staple in our community.

And don’t forget to come to the gallery show opening to see his beautiful work in person- Saturday, May 5th 7-10 pm.

til then,
Hannah G.

‘Habitable Zones’ Opening Night

Our current exhibit, ‘Habitable Zones’, is one that evokes images of otherworldly organisms and life on other planets – you know, Astrobiology.  For someone who just began steamrolling through old Battlestar Galactica episodes, this subject definitely peaks my interest.  Each artist who partook in the show has a different take on what Astrobiology means, as you can see in the array of interesting pieces.  I spoke with a few of them and got their creative take.

I first talked with Travis Eldon Knowles, the man behind the show.  Travis came up with the idea after hearing about the Astrobiology conference taking place at Georgia Tech throughout the month of April.  An avid sci-fi-er himself, he thought it would be cool to put together a show to explore the subject through more artistic outlets.  He got in touch with the organizers at Tech and they jumped at the idea of incorporating this into the month-long program.  After 20 or so phone calls, Travis pulled together an A-list of artists to help bring it all together – himself included.

Nathaniel Emerson is a friend of Travis’s from their days at the Atlanta College of Art.  He has a distinct nostalgic style, usually painting scenes of trains and other “old stuff”.  In his three ‘Habitable Zones’ paintings, Nathaniel wanted to take a 1950′s look at space exploration and planetary Geo Domes using bright colors and Alice and Wonderland-esque themes.  And, if you look for it, you’ll even find some trains.

Another of Travis’s friends, Courtney Burton, was pretty psyched when she was asked to be part of the show.  Her ultra-cool circular collages were appropriately made from old National Geographic magazine cutouts, all in different but complimentary colors.  The largest piece at the top has a removable back that you can use as a picture frame or whatever you want the piece to be – cleverly inviting the owner to engage with her art.

And last but definitely not least, I talked with Emily Cameron who created two eye-catching geometric paintings for the show.  Unlike our other sci-fi enthusiasts, Emily was a bit stumped when presented with the topic of Astrobiology.  However, when she began to concept ideas, she was inspired by ideas of planets evolving and land formations.  With a focus on dirt, sun and water, the bright orangey-reds and vibrant blues almost jump out and grab you.

These were only 4 of the 19 artists who conjured up some amazing work for ‘Habitable Zones’ but, luckily, you can see them all in the gallery until the end of the month.  Come on over and imagine life on other planets with us…or just look at some cool art.

See you soon,

Danielle
