Dorothy Stucki X Streetela & RLand X Scoutmob

Dang y’all. Dorothy Stucki is one bad ass, pretty lady and if you haven’t guessed already we have a major lady crush on her!  Thank the stars she’s a part of our extended YBGB family.   If you don’t believe me, check this video interview out that she did for Streetela!

See it Here!

As she explains in the interview, she’s one fourth of Atlanta’s genius collective, Plastic Aztecs.  I don’t think I can ever have too many crystals, skulls, bugs, or bones to saturate my eyes with, so keep on keeping on, Dorothy.  We love you! (and your Erica Weiner earrings you got at our shop that you’re wearing in the video..ha!)

In other news, if you wanna get a little insight into Father Land’s mind, check out his most recent interview with Scoutmob! Read away here! He keeps us laughing on the regular and we’re glad you guys get to finally get to experience that!

Some new items you should check out:

Center Bakery’s GEORGIA JAMS AND JELLIES! Can you say yum? Lori works as a contract baker and pastry chef in Fayetteville, GA. Something she didn’t learn in culinary school is the art of preserves. She taught herself to make jam and jelly using the Ball Blue Book as her guide, as well as some advice from her Dad. She made her first jar in 2009, and with every batch she learns something new.  She picks all of the fruits locally, and she also grows all the peppers for her pepper jellies in her garden. All the fruits she uses for her jams and jellies are grown without pesticides.

Romina of Miles of Light, hailing from Dallas, Texas does nature inspired photography, prints, and freelance graphic design.

Vadim Malkin‘s ceramics! Since graduating with his BFA, Vadim has been working on his ceramics as a Resident Artist at Crealdé School of Art in Winter Park, Florida. His work has been on display in numerous galleries, shops and shows throughout Florida, including Tallahassee, St. Petersburg, Gainesville, and international exhibitions like the Chung-ju Craft Bienniel, Korea, and the ICMEA emerging artist, China.

For those of you waiting for us to get some new Lillian Crowe jewelry, hurry in now! Here’s some of the stuff we’ve got at the moment:

Atlanta Art Organizations Unite!

Designers Call takes the art of design very seriously so we’re feeling super special that they blogged about us this week!

Atlanta Art Community Gathering

We were honored to host a town hall meeting this week that included most of Atlanta’s art organizations along with several artists.  To say the least, it was very meaningful to come together with so many artistic movers and shakers, city-wide!  Tight-knit togetherness is something Atlanta has lacked and the mutual respect and excitement was at an all-time high.  We’re really looking forward to future meetings and hope they continue for a long time!

Louis Corrigan of Flux Projects and Possible Futures leads the meeting.

Laurie Stallings of gloATL and Beth Malone of Dashboard Co-op.

Here’s to a strong art community in Atlanta!

Love,

Maggie

Ben Venom!

You guys should all check out this rad interview Ben Venom did on Illogical Contraption!  Georgia State BFA bred, Ben now works out of San Francisco and I’m sure is making it rain with this gnarly quilts (which I would kill for and be the only reason I wouldn’t let my dogs sleep on the bed with me anymore).

I mean, bask in that.

Check out the good read here!

And not to mention, Ben was Young Blood’s first intern, ever. Ever ever.  So he holds a special place in our YBGB hearts.  We sure do love metal, but we can still be tender.. see!

Call for Artists and AWESOME Flux Project

Gettin’ it On – MondoHomo 2011

CALL FOR ARTISTS

Curators: Donnie Reider, Lauren McDonald, Drew Watts, and Ruth Stanford.

Submissions are now being accepted from visual artists for exhibition at the 2011 MondoHomo Festival in Atlanta, GA.

Since its inception, MondoHomo, an event unlike any in the South, has received national attention as a stage for radical queer creative work, and this year marks the fifth annual presentation of new, queer visual art in the concurrent gallery show.

For the 2011 exhibition we will be using the gallery space at the Phillip Rush Center near downtown Atlanta. Works will be seen by both visitors to the festival and patrons of the community center for the entire month of June. We are also accepting proposals for temporary, site-specific projects to last the duration of the week–long festival. These pieces are to be installed in the East Atlanta Village, where MondoHomo’s nighttime events will take place. Visitors will be provided with a map of site-specific works so they can “walk” the East Atlanta component of the art show while interacting with art in unexpected environments.

We are seeking submissions of recent queer artwork in ALL MEDIA – including but not limited to painting, photography, sculpture, video, installation, sound, performance, multiples, and documented projects. We will be accepting both completed artwork and proposals.

As the organizers of the art exhibition at MondoHomo, we strive to create an engaging forum for fresh, radical, challenging queer art. Be it political, humorous, unsettling, outrageous, or nuanced, we want to show the state of queer art today.

Deadline for entries: Received by May 2

Notification of Acceptance: No later than May 6

Work Received for Installation: May 17

MondoHomo 2011: May 26-30

Gallery Show: May 26-June 26

Submission Guidelines: For finished work, please submit up to five jpgs (under 2 MB). Also include a corresponding image list with artist name, title of work, size, medium, and year. Links to video or sound work are also permitted. Documentation of past work, or links to artists’ portfolios, are encouraged but not required.

For proposals, please submit a written explanation of your idea, along with the best possible estimation of what will be required in terms of space, equipment, and time. We will work one-on-one with artists and do our best to meet your needs. Documentation of past work or links to artists’ portfolios is especially encouraged
for artists submitting proposals.

Please send submissions to:
mondoartshow2011@gmail.com

For a review of a past MondoHomo art exhibition.
Note: This year we are adding artist talks to the festival program. On the afternoon of May 28, artists will have the opportunity to speak briefly and answer questions about their work. If you are not located in the Atlanta area but would like to attend Mondo Homo and participate in the artist talks, please note this with your submission and we will contact you separately to discuss travel options.

AWESOME FLUX PROJECT

Gyun Hur’s “Spring Hiatus” continues at Lenox Square mall (outside Macy’s). De-installation starts March 24th and will extend to the end of March. The installation/de-installation is part of the piece.

This has been an amazing project that’s reached a broad demographic of people who don’t usually attend galleries and museums. I’ve been so energized by the great conversations with people passing by. I encourage everyone to see this piece, and even volunteer for a couple of hours as a docent. Lenox is a fantastic place to reach new audiences, and I would encourage all of you to think about what you or your organization might be able to do there. Gyun’s long-duration, process-oriented piece has been especially well-suited for the mall.
