Spotlight: MORE New Vendors!

Us YB ladies have been busy bees getting new vendors into the store! Here are couple more you might not have seen yet!

Miju And You, from Montreal, Canada. Started in late summer 2008, Miju is the brainchild of Furni owner Mike Giles and his lovely ladyfriend and design champion Judy Lawrence. Their aim is and always will be to create aesthetically pleasing, thoughtful designed jewels and other magical items.

Farouche, from sunny California, has been featured more places than I can even count! Like, Real SimpleApartment Therapy, Etsy Featured Sellers, and Design Work Life!

English Muffin Shop, also from Montreal, Canada! English Muffin is a small design studio dedicated to creating beautiful, fun and educational prints for kids and kids at heart. As a graphic designer and muffin lover, Bess finds endless joy in dreaming up new and wonderful ideas for the English Muffin shop. Inspiration comes in many forms, from old books of botanical drawings, to summer evenings eating ice cream to vintage automobiles, she finds the simplicity and beauty of everyday life… well, inspiring!

Have a lovely Sunday! Swing by and see what else we’ve got, like our new Bird Themed table!

Goodie Goods!

We’ve gotten SO many new vendors to grace the shelves of our shop as of recently. It’s so exciting and I can barely keep my credit card in my wallet. Way too tempting, don’t you agree?!

Embroidered Necklaces by Merriweather Council out of Boston, Mass!  Danielle is a recent graduate of Massachusetts College of Art and Design with a BFA in 3D Fine Arts with a Fibers concentration (a mouth full).. but she sure knows what she’s doing! Lots of spring colors!!

Vanessa Villarreal of Villarreal Ceramics sure makes you want to come up with any excuse you can to throw a party, only to show off these amazing plates, platters, and cups.  Had painted porcelain from Tucson? Yes please.

Unloved thrift store plates given new life? I want these all over my wall.  Angela, born and bred in LA, of Beat Up Creations is cracking me up with these things.

And for those of you, like myself, being born void of a green thumb, these little stuffed cacti from Atlanta’s own, Fattycakes, are PERFECT. In every way. Jordan’s got our backs.

Eat it up, Atlanta. And stop by the shop to see even more goods!

Spotlight: Jen Ray

So the other day I was following Where the Lovely Things Are, and guess whose work popped up as a featured artist? Atlanta’s own Jen Ray, creator of Corduroy! It’s a lovely little post; click the link if you want to check out the mug that Mallory was gushing over (and rightly so!).

Here are a few of Jen’s recently added items via her etsy shop:

YOUNG BLOOD GALLERY AND BOUTIQUE PRESENTS

“INTERBEAST”

March 5-27
Opening March 5th 7-10PM
Featuring:
Interbeast came about after Nick Kuszyk contacted us to let us know what he and his fellow artists and past collaborators Chip 7, Future Colors of America, El Kamino, and Parskid had been up to lately, and we are thrilled to bring you their work here at Young Blood.

Nick Kuszyk is a NYC artist known for his colorful and elaborate robot-themed works.  His style, while unmistakable, has drawn comparisons to Keith Haring and Bosch.  Kuszyk has made a substantial mark in the art world in recent years: as a Williamsburg street artist and painter,  the recipient of a fellowship from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, and as the author and illustrator of “R.Robot Saves Lunch”, a children’s book published by Penguin in 2009.

Note the figure in the bottom right corner- this piece is huge!

A view of a past installation by Kuszyk.
El Kamino, previously known as Elk, is a painter whose work is distinctively informed by the techniques he has honed throughout his years as a graffiti artist.  Or perhaps it is the other way around, and his rich, textural style accelerated his success in the realm of street art.  Fellow Richmond graffiti artist and founder of Born Ugly Magazine Michael Broth says of El Kamino, “…he’s the only person who I’ve ever seen use spray paint and paint like a painter does…lay down layers and build stuff up. An incredibly talented person in general.”  As of late, El Kamino has been exhibiting his paintings across the US in galleries such as Flatcolor in Seattle, Zakka in New York City, and Eye Level Art in Charleston. For more information, check out this video interview with El Kamino and RVA Magazine.

Parskid combines fantasy and street art to create his own world filled with vibrant colors and unusual creatures” (read more in this 2010 interview from Orange Alert). Parskid was born and raised in the Pacific Northwest where he drew inspiration from his childhood, the weather, nature, fantasy and folklore. He experiments with paint, plush and digital mediums. His work has been exhibited in many cities in the United States including Seattle, LA and NYC and abroad in Australia, Taiwan, Spain and the UK.

Future Colors of America are Albert Reyes, Matt Furie, and Aiyana Udesen, three California-based artists whose collaborative drawing and illustration work was recently described as having “a DIY sensibility, illustrative aesthetic, and fuck-all attitude who’s charmingly hilarious pop commentary is indicative of something we don’t feel comfortable defining… we for one hope that these truly are the future colors of America, at the very least we’ll settle for them being the future colors of the Bay Area” (Hi-Fructose Magazine, July 2010).  Reyes, Furie, and Udesen are all accomplished artists in their own right, and together they form a trifecta that has been the subject of national attention, gathering acclaim from the likes of Juxtapoz, Fecal Face, Format, and Hi-Fructose.  The Future Colors have had solo exhibitions in San Francisco at Giant Robot and Fecal Face Gallery.

Chip 7 is a rising star in the urban contemporary art scene, described by famed New York City artist ZEPHYR as “a visionary. He makes visionary art. What exactly that means to me is that he culls his ideas from the rawest place where the purest inspiration comes from; the internal core located at the center of us all.”  Chip refined his style as a graffiti artist and painter while assisting the renowned artist Dalek, and in recent years he has shifted his focus to developing his studio work, creating “brightly colored confessions of a clutter-brain through science fiction psychedelic fantasy” (Juxtapoz).

Be sure to join us for this particularly exceptional exhibit.
Let’s show these out-of-town artists some proper support!
Music provided by DJ Chris Devoe.
Don’t forget, our sister and brother galleries with Ponce Crush will be crushing.

What’s Coming Up in March?

Can you believe it is almost March? Holy cow. Wasn’t New Years like, yesterday?

So our next show is creeping up on us, the opening is MARCH 5th!

It’s called Interbeast and is featuring a handful of really awesome artists. Let me introduce you:

El Kamino is an American painter hailing from the state of Virginia. While maintaining a presence in the world of wall painting, he is a veteran of DIY art shows, displaying canvases in small towns across the south east. An avid fisherman, his gallery work focuses on the animals he encounters along the creeks and rivers he frequents. This dude who used to write,” Broth says of El Kamino, “he’s the only person who I’ve ever seen use spray paint and paint like a painter does, like lay down layers and build stuff up. An incredibly talented person in general.”(styleweekly.com)

He experiments with paint, plush and digital mediums. His work has been exhibited in many cities in the United States including LA and NYC and abroad in Australia, Taiwan, Spain and the UK.(flatcolor.com)

Work by Parskid:

Matt Furie and Future Colors of America is made up of “artists Albert Reyes, Matt
Furie
, and Aiyana Udesen. Albert Reyes is a Los Angeles-based San Francisco Art Institute graduate who has developed a style equally influenced by graffiti, comics, and fine art. Among other media, he draws and prints on the inside covers of old books and mixes
traditional Mexican imagery, popular culture icons, and political suggestion.
Aiyana Udesen went to school at the San Francisco Art Institute with Reyes, and lives in San Francisco, where she gained attention for her “how-to-draw” series of zines, many of which have married her interests in celebrities, animals, and realistic-yet-stylish illustration.
Matt Furie, a San Francisco-based artist whose richly detailed, hyper colored illustrations and paintings reflect the creative cross breeding of The Neverending Story, unrestrained imagination of The Muppet Show, and humor of ALF. His corruption by popular culture is further complicated, or perhaps enriched by the energy of BMX culture and anarchy of street art.” (Juxtapoz.com)

Chip7
Chip assisted Dalek and painted some of his work.”He culls his ideas from the rawest place where the purest inspiration comes from; the internal core located at the center of us all. In the macrocosmin/macrocosmic interchange, many would know this to be the Center of the Universe.”

“The unique, writhing, organic configurations of Chip’s work are best left to the dissection and discussions of the viewer. “

- ZEPHYR

Work by Chip7:

Nick Kuszyk is a NY/Williamsburg artist that has been painting robots for over a decade. Nick, who is informally affiliated with Banksy and Colossal Media, is recognized for his colorful, detailed robot-themed works: “If you see someone pointing to a piece of Nick
Kuszyk’s artwork the next thing you’ll usually hear come out of their mouth is “It’s The Robot Guy!”. His work is easily recognizable but not forgettable. With colorful 1950′s sci-fi style renditions of artificial intelligence, no one portrays robots quite like him. Nick’s robots visually pop off the surface and always hint at a deeper narrative.

So, I better see you at our next opening, March 5th from 7-10PM.
