Year of the Rabbit

Did you know: that the Chinese New Year doesn’t officially begin until the 3rd of February this year? I’m citing Wikipedia here, so take this with a grain of salt, but according to the article, “Chinese New Year is the longest and most important festivity in the Chinese Lunar Calendar”—and being based on a lunar calendar, the date of the Chinese New Year changes. 2011 will be the year of the Rabbit, and last until Jan 23, 2012.

To be candid, I wasn’t aware that the specific date of the new Chinese calendar didn’t begin until February, but in anticipation of the upcoming year of the rabbit, I’m gonna go with the bunny theme here like I planned it.

Check out a few of the bunny-related products we have in Young Blood right now!

And while not technically a “bunny”, Leah Duncan’s too-fabulous-not-to-include jack rabbit tea towel :)

Here’s wishing you all a lovely new year,

You may not have noticed…

We’ve been carrying Stone & Honey and  Small Things for quite a bit, but sometimes it’s easy to overlook them when they’re in the case. Their stuff is so versatile and I personally own a ring and a necklace f rom them!

Small Things says:

“I learned to make jewelry in college while studying abroad in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. I took the class on a whim, really, thinking it would be a fun thing to try on the side while pursuing a more ‘serious’ education as a painter. I knew I was hooked on the jewely making when I was dreaming about soldering little bits of metal and hadn’t picked up a paintbrush in months. But there was no jewelry program at my school when I got back, so I finished up college with a focus on mixed media work.

In 2000, I moved to Portland with a studio art degree and no idea what to do with the rest of my life. After stints as temp, tile shipper, and art teacher, I still hadn’t found something that felt like it really fit. And I kept thinking about that damn jewelry… I still had a little stash of silver left over from my time in Mexico, so I pulled it out, taught myself to cut glass, and got to work.

By the fall of 2002 I had kissed my steady job goodbye and smallthings was born. Now I get to be my own boss and make jewelry all day, and I love it. Each and every one of my pieces is laid out, cut, and soldered by hand. And that’s not gonna change. It’s a lot of work sometimes, but it’s this process that keeps me engaged, connected to, and excited about what I do everyday. And I think I really have found my dream job…”

About Stone & Honey, a new line from Small Things:

“this new and innovative collection features bold, ethereal pieces fashioned from brazilian agate and our signature delicate metalwork. crisp geometric design combines with the rough-hewn beauty of natural agate for a look that is modern, eye catching and rich in contrast. because no two stones are alike, each piece is one of a kind. this singularity allows for endless possibilities and a collection that is constantly evolving. in addition to work in agate and sterling silver, we’ve also created a complementary line of delicate gold fill necklaces, perfect for everyday wear. stone and honey marks the beginning of an entirely new direction for the smallthings studio, and we couldn’t be more excited. we hope you are too.”

Check out some of their stuff! We recently got a shipment in, so get it while you can!

And a reminder! Our next show opens on January 8th! Come and check it out!

“I believe this show represents a strong mix of work that is moving, irreverent, edgy and traditional.  This variety will enhance the inherent connection between the work, allowing viewers to compare and contrast approaches,” says Jim O’Donnell, curator.

The show will display an array of artist approaches addressing the themes of spirituality, self-image, relationships, emotions, and modern life. An exciting blend of works ranging from large-scale drawings to mythological sculptures to surrealist-like compositions can all be found at the show.

Artists:

Karen Cleveland, Ben Goldman, Kelly O’Brien, Sam Parker, Chloe Alexander, Tamara Argo, Amelia Netto, Kurt Raschke, Katie Reising, Marcy Starz , Rachel Lambert, Melissa Bigler, James O’Donnell, Angela Topetzes, and Blaine Watson.

We are happy to announce the birth of our new gallery collective,

Ponce Crush!

Ponce Crush is Young Blood, Beep Beep and Kibbee Gallery (all centered around Ponce de Leon Ave) joining together to have all of their openings on the same night!
We hope to encourage show attendance and support of the arts in Atlanta,” says Ann-Marie Manker of Kibbee Gallery.

We will now host the opening receptions for our monthly art shows on the same night of the month, which usually falls on the first Saturday.

“There’s a great deal of mutual respect between the galleries, and with our spaces being so close, creating this kind of event felt like a natural progression,” says James McConnell of Beep Beep Gallery.

The collective will kick off their openings on Saturday, January 8th, 2011, with a collective animal theme.

Botany

Today in Young Blood I noticed a mini-trend in subject matter: ginkgo leaves. Here are some of our ginkgo related goodies:

Ginkgo Tee by New Duds

Circle Necklace by Small Things Designs

Cards by by Eleanor Grosch

Earrings by Erica Weiner

Notes about ginkgo trees:

Ginkgo Biloba Trees have been known to live for hundreds of years; botanists especially love this.

Interesting fact as told by the site all4naturalhealth : “The sole survivors of the atomic bomb blast over Hiroshima, Japan by the US in 1945 were several ginkgo biloba trees”.

Ginkgo has been long believed to be a natural memory booster, and supplements from the leaves can be found in almost any natural health store.

And, I apologize for the cheese factor, but autumn gold ginkgo trees always remind me of my significant other; two years ago, I remember us holding hands and kicking through piles of the yellow leaves after a game. It’s just one of those memories.

Good night all!
